Such an approach proposes cognition is in the job of attempting to predict what will perturb sensory inputs next. We argue that the predictive processing approach (as held by Hohwy, 2013 and Clark, 2016) is a more suitable framework for Type 1 processing. We understand there might be differences in the processing architecture that grounds each type of process, thus requiring distinct cognitive frameworks for each. However, as Samuels (2009) has noted, there is a problem of determining why these group of features form clusters, more than what the labels Type (or system) 1 and 2 can capture, the unity problem. One cluster describes a fast and intuitive process (Type 1), while the other describes a slow and reflective one (Type 2), (see Evans, 2008 Evans & Stanovich, 2013 Kahneman, 2011). This theory proposes there must be a sharp distinction in thinking to explain two clusters of correlational features. However insofar as digital systems can be described by abstracting away fromĪbstract Dual Process Theory has increasingly gained fame as a framework for explaining evidence in reasoning and decision making tasks. Rather than the rule-governed manipulation of inner states, real-time physical interactions need to be honored if a game that conforms to the rules of pool is to be played. Whereas chess is a formal game that can be played regardless of details of physical implementation (think of Kasparov's legal defeat to Deep Blue), and where rule-governed manipulations of symbolic states suffi ce for the purposes of conforming to the rules of chess, in the case of pool, the actual striking of the cue ball with a nice solid hit cannot be dispensed with. Questions of this sort (Kirsh, 1991 Haugeland, 1998) highlight the contraposi-tion between those aspects of cognition where a rule-governed, formal approach appears to apply, and those other aspects of cognition that are deeply rooted in the physical nuts-and-bolts of the interacting agent. Is cognitive activity more similar to a game of chess than to a game of pool? In order to answer this question we need to know fi rst what are the relevant differences, cognitively speaking, between a game of pool and a game of chess. In the course of doing so, we shall draw a very quick sketch of the rise and development of cognitive psychology and cognitive science, setting the scene for the other chapters of this book. The following pages are dedicated to some classical attempts to accomplish this task. Therefore, one of the main tasks for the philosopher of psychology is to unravel this peculiarity, trying to shed some light upon the relations between these different ways of describing ourselves.
